Fox of the Week: Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 3rd, 1906. Having been born to an impovershed mother, and without a present father to turn to, at the age of 8, she entered the workforce, living with and working for a succession of two white families. Both work situations ended in trauma as the first resulted in her hands being dipped in boiling water for using too much laundry detergent, while in the second, the husband of the household began to take an interest to the young Josephine. In 1917, when Josephine was 11 years old, the East St. … read more

Isabella Blow was born on November 19th, 1958 in London, England.  Her family came from an aristocratic background and she was one of 4 children in the household. Fox of the Week: Ellen Von Unwerth

Hello Foxes, I am writing you this week from one of the worlds greatest cities, Berlin. When in Germany, it only makes sense to celebrate some of its fine exports, among them beer, bohemianism, and Ellen Von Unwerth. That being said, Ellen is one elusive fox! Scavenge as I did, the public information on her is surprisingly limited, but allow me to string together those fine hidden pearls that I was able to come across in my search. Ellen Von Unwerth was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1954. Evidently, she spent some time living in Bavaria in her youth in … read more

Fox of the Week: Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter holds court as one of our favorite film foxes. While having come from a lineage of baronesses and diplomats, Helena’s life was far from one of  lightness and leisure one might expect given the status of her family. Her mother, after suffering a nervous breakdown in 1971 became a psychotherapist, while and her father, a merchant banker, was rendered paralyzed after a mishap in surgery intended to remove an acoustic neuroma tumor. The incidents left an indelible mark on her family, and indeed on young Helena herself. She has spoken openly in interviews about her unconscious desire … read more

Fox of the Week, NY Edition: Lydia Lunch

“It’s really difficult to find an honest sexual relationship where you can express what you want and desire and have them understand why that drives you. It’s a life-long study. What is beautiful is the more that you know what you want, one does become a connoisseur of their own desire, which you should be. We shouldn’t accept what turned us on five years ago. We should be constantly progressing in our desires and understanding them better so we can openly be satisfied.” – Lydia Lunch to Perfect Sound Forever Magazine, 1997 Lydia Lunch is one of the most captivating artists … read more
